My Mundane Musings

Growing up I longed for the fast paced life of big city life and corporate America. Now I’m a stay at home mom of 4 in a small rural community! And I wouldn’t have it any other way! (At least for now).

I was asked an interesting question – TWICE – today.  If a non-believer were to come into your home, would they know you were a Christian family?

I gave it some thought and you know, I really think they would.  We’re not the perfect family by any stretch of the imagination.  We have our faults and our crabby days just like any other family.  If given the chance, I’m sure Dr. Phil could give us some pointers to improve our home life.

The Bible says that people will know that we are His disciples by our love for each other. (John 13:35).  If you use that as a measure, I really think that the average person off the street could walk into our family and know that we love Christ.  There is something different about our family.

We enjoy spending time together as a family.  We have fun together.  We laugh – A LOT!  It’s not uncommon to find two or more of us all snuggled up together.  My kids aren’t afraid to be seen in public with us, despite our best efforts to embarass them from time to time.  We are a family that LIKES each other.

Unfortunately, in today’s society, that’s not as common as it should be.  Even more unfortunately, in today’s churches, it’s not as common as it should be.  We tell people that they should love one another and yet we can’t show love to our spouses and children.  We say that God is love and gossip about our sister or brother in Christ and tear them down.  We teach that love is at the very center of the Gospel and our lives revolve around bitterness and holding grudges.

If the world is going to know that we are followers of Christ by our love for each other, will they be able to see God’s love radiating from you?  Will they know that YOU are a diciple by the way that you treat your family and friends?  Will they know that God loves them because YOU love them?  What does your attitude say about you?

I love snuggling with family too. Good question, maybe we should ask that one to our congregations?
