My kids all appear to be on the mend. Noah still has a bit of a sore throat and is acting pretty pitiful, but the rest of them are better. Which is good, because as of yesterday, we’re incredibly busy!
Yesterday, we loaded up and drove down to St. Louis. We stopped and had lunch with a friend at a place called King Louie’s Drive-in (no website – but they should because it’s amazing rootbeer!). My burger was good – not too greasy and the lettuce and tomato were nice and crisp, which is rare this time of year when those things are out of season around here. The fries were good and at first I was disappointed that they screwed up my cheese fries, but about halfway through his fries Chip informed me that it was NACHO cheese on his fries. And while I like nacho cheese on say – nachos – I’m not a big fan of it on anything else. This cheese connoisseur from Wisconsin would have been sadly disappointed. All in all, it was a great lunch with great company.
After lunch, we drove up river some to see the wintering eagles. One of the best kept secrets about Western IL are the eagles that come downriver from MN/WI and Iowa to winter away from the frozen tundra of the North. We thought it was going to be a bust and were driving back to our friends house when we saw about 8 female eagles showing off for the males of the area. It was quite the sight and some ended up fairly close to our car. Elijah counted and said we saw 23 different eagles along the way.
After spending a bit of time at their house and loading up on some free goodies (beauty supplies for me and “little girl” stuff for Kait), we drove down river to Chip’s brother’s house to spend some time with family. Chip’s brother was working, so we just stayed for a bit and chatted and let the kids play before coming home. His brother had called as we were leaving and said that he could be home in 30 minutes to do dinner, but we were tired after a long day so decided to head home and catch them next time.
And it’s a good thing we did! We were just leaving Burger King (Kait’s choice because they have Groovy Girls right now) when my friend called to let me know that more snow was on the way. If we hadn’t left at that point, we certainly would have started out. We were about 3/4 of the way home when the snow really started blowing. By the time we reached the road that leads to our town from IL 128, the drifting was so bad that you could hardly see the road anymore. This same road was CLEAR when we left out yesterday morning! But we made it home with no big issues and Kait dove into her new goodies while we got the other kids ready for bed.
This morning, we woke up to at least 2 more inches of new snow – probably closer to three. They are calling for rain next week and I’m so hoping that it comes to melt away all this icky snow. We’re spending the day cleaning and getting ready for my mom, sister and nephew to come for a few days (Sunday – Wednesday) next week. With us all being sick last week, I’m going to need the entire day to get things whipped back into shape I think! Not to mention that MOUNDS of laundry that we have to do. If I’m not on by Monday, someone send in the National Guard because I may just be buried under an avalanche! LOL!
